This LGBTQ NFT artwork is about the new branding of Chambers bar in Cork, Ireland, which changed its attitude towards the LGBTQ community by no longer hosting drag and queer shows, and removing rainbow flags and queer signs from the interior due to UCC Freshers’ Week.
UCC stands for University College Cork and Freshers’ Week is the official start of the new academic year for students, so Chambers wants to multiply its profits by welcoming a wider demographic of straight customers.
Since its inception in 2006, Chambers has been a cozy and safe space for LGBTQ people, hosting drag performances and events, but has suddenly changed its politics and even adopted a new brand name: “Sinners.” So the drag performers were shocked and declared that this behavior is very disappointing and contributes to the spread of homophobia and transphobia.
Although Chambers’ size and budget are not as scalable as Target’s, the new brand recalls Target’s strategy of removing LGBTQ merchandise from its stores across the United States.
